FAQ — Horses Smith

Clear answers to common questions about buying, selling, sourcing, viewings, vetting, and logistics.

Buying and viewings

What types of horses do you offer?
We focus on showjumping sport horses — from talented young prospects to proven competition horses. Availability changes frequently, and some suitable horses may be sourced privately rather than listed publicly.
Can you source a horse that is not listed on the website?
Yes. If you share your brief (rider profile, target level, budget, timeline, preferences), we can propose suitable options through our network in the UK and Europe.
How do viewings work?
We arrange viewings directly with the relevant yard/seller and confirm what will be available on the day (schooling, jumping, hacking where appropriate). If you need a second viewing, we will coordinate this where possible.
Can I try a horse more than once?
Often, yes. For higher-value purchases or where you are deciding between options, a second viewing is normal and recommended.

Vetting, health, and paperwork

Do you arrange vettings?
We support the process, but the vetting is always carried out by your chosen veterinary surgeon. We can help coordinate dates, gather history and media, and ensure the vet has what they need.
What vetting do you recommend?
This depends on age, level, and intended use. Many buyers choose a multi-stage vetting with imaging appropriate to the horse's job. Your vet is best placed to advise based on your risk tolerance and goals.
What paperwork comes with the horse?
This depends on the horse's registration and location, but typically includes identification/passport documentation and any relevant ownership transfer paperwork. We will clarify requirements early in the process.

Deposits, pricing, and timelines

Can you hold a horse with a deposit?
Sometimes. Holding terms vary by seller and situation. If a deposit is used, we recommend documenting: the holding period, what happens if the horse fails vetting, and whether any fees are refundable.
How are horses priced?
Pricing reflects age, pedigree, performance record, training level, rideability, and market demand. We will be transparent about the price position and what comparable horses typically achieve.
How quickly can a purchase complete?
Timelines depend on viewing availability, vetting scheduling, and paperwork/logistics. Some transactions complete quickly; others are staged to reduce risk and coordinate practicalities.

Transport and delivery

Do you offer transport?
We can support transport planning and handover coordination. Transport is typically arranged with a specialist equine transporter suited to the route and horse's needs.
Do you work with buyers outside the UK?
Yes. Cross-border sales can involve additional documentation and planning. We will clarify what applies based on where the horse is located and where it is going.

Sellers and representation

Do you offer sales representation?
Yes. We help present horses clearly and professionally, qualify enquiries, and coordinate viewings, vetting, and handover steps.
What information do you need to represent a horse?
At minimum: age, height, breeding, location, training level, competition record where applicable, recent videos, temperament notes, and any relevant health/vetting history you can share.

Ethics and welfare

What is your approach to welfare?
We believe long-term performance depends on correct training, management, and suitability. We aim to match horses responsibly and encourage appropriate professional advice at each stage.

breeding

What bloodlines do you focus on?
We specialise in proven showjumping bloodlines with exceptional temperament and athleticism. Our breeding program features top European sire lines known for their competitive success at international level, combined with quality mare lines that produce consistent, rideable offspring.
