British-Produced Showjumpers for Argentine Riders

Horses Smith produces elite showjumping sport horses in Kent, England, and sells to Argentine riders either delivered to a European base or imported home through SENASA. We are straight about which makes sense for a given horse.

Argentina knows horses, which makes this a simple conversation

Argentina has a horse culture that needs no explanation from us, and Argentine riders reading a horse are not easily sold to. That suits how we work. Every horse here was bred by us or brought on by us on one yard, so the account you get of a horse's temperament, its rideability and its limits comes from the people who produced it. We publish full pedigrees, real video and a price, and we tell you what we do not know as readily as what we do.

Import to Argentina, or a European base

Importing to Argentina runs through SENASA and requires an import permit, pre-export isolation and testing in the UK, an export health certificate and quarantine on arrival, with horses generally flying into Ezeiza. It is well-trodden but it takes time and it carries duty. The alternative, and the one a competition buyer usually takes, is to leave the horse in Europe on a yard in Belgium or the Netherlands and campaign it there, which keeps the horse in the classes that matter and avoids the import cost altogether.

The currency question, said plainly

We price in pounds or euros, not pesos, and we know what Argentine exchange controls and the cost of moving money abroad mean for a purchase of this size. We would rather have that conversation openly at the start than discover a problem at the point of transfer. Tell us how you intend to pay and we will tell you whether it works before either of us spends time on a horse.

Prices in GBP or EUR on application, not ARS. Horses measured in centimetres (hands in brackets). Import duty and SENASA costs are additional.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to import the horse or keep it in Europe?
For a horse bought to compete, a European base is usually better: no import duty, no quarantine, and the horse stays in the circuit it was produced for. For a horse coming home to a family yard, import makes sense. We will give you a straight answer for the horse in question.
What does importing to Argentina involve?
An import permit through SENASA, pre-export isolation and blood testing in the UK, an export health certificate, a flight generally into Ezeiza, and quarantine on arrival. A local customs agent handles clearance. Allow two to three months.
Can I pay in instalments or in a currency other than GBP?
We price in GBP or EUR and are happy to discuss the mechanics before you commit. Given Argentine exchange controls, tell us early how the payment will be made so we can confirm it is workable rather than find out late.
Can I send someone to try the horse?
Yes, and we would encourage it. Start with video, including the unflattering parts, then send a rider or agent you trust. We will also arrange an independent pre-purchase examination by a vet you choose, not one we appoint.
Do you speak Spanish?
Harriet does not, but everything runs comfortably in English over WhatsApp, and there is a full Spanish section on this page below. Written Spanish is never an obstacle.
