Horses Smith — For American Riders

European Show Jumping Horses, Personally Selected for American Riders

Every horse is owned, developed, and sold directly by Harriet Smith — no brokers, no dealers, no intermediaries.

We Understand the Hesitation

Buying a horse from overseas is a significant decision. It is not just the investment — it is the uncertainty that comes with it. You are relying on videos, photos, reputation, and instinct, all while trying to protect yourself from costly mistakes.

Many buyers have heard the stories. Horses that arrive nothing like expected. Sellers who disappear once payment is made. Transport delays, poor communication, and a complete lack of accountability when things do not go to plan.

At Horses Smith, we understand those concerns because we hear them time and time again. That is exactly why we do things differently.

Every horse we offer is selected with care, produced with honesty, and represented with complete transparency. We are not here to simply move horses on — we are here to stand behind them, protect our reputation, and give our clients confidence at every stage of the process.

Harriet Smith, owner and breeder at Horses Smith, Kent, England

Owner & Breeder

Meet Harriet Smith

Harriet Smith is the founder of Horses Smith, a private collection of carefully bred and selected showjumping horses and future breeding prospects, chosen with a clear focus on quality, pedigree, performance, and market appeal.

She is not a broker, and Horses Smith is not a business built on volume. Each horse is sourced with intent, produced with care, and represented with complete honesty. The collection reflects Harriet's eye for athleticism, presence, blood, and the kind of natural quality that cannot be manufactured.

Based in Kent, England, Harriet has built Horses Smith around a simple belief: exceptional horses deserve exceptional representation. Her experience across breeding, young horse production, and performance gives her a deep understanding of what creates not only a talented horse, but one with true presence, value, and future.

For clients in the United States and beyond, that means confidence in both the horse and the name behind it.

Because at Horses Smith, every horse is personally chosen, deeply understood, and offered with intention.

"We bought Sybil as a rising 8-year-old from Harriet and he has been the most wonderful horse for our family. From start to finish, Harriet made us feel completely confident in our decision — even buying from across the ocean. He arrived safe, sound, and exactly as described."

Questions from US Buyers

We've answered the questions we hear most from American riders considering buying from Europe.

01How does buying a horse from the UK actually work?
It starts with a conversation. We get to know you — your goals, your level, your lifestyle — and then recommend horses that genuinely fit. You'll receive videos, vet history, and full pedigree details. If you'd like, we arrange a visit. Once you're ready, we handle export vetting, flights, quarantine, and delivery to your barn.
02Is it safe to buy a horse I haven't sat on?
Many of our US clients purchase on the strength of video, vet reports, and our personal recommendation — because every horse we sell is one we've owned, ridden, and developed ourselves. You're not buying blind from a dealer. That said, we always welcome visits if you'd like to try before you buy.
03What does shipping to the US cost and how long does it take?
Shipping typically costs between $8,000 and $12,000 depending on departure and destination airports. Door-to-door transit including quarantine usually takes 7–10 days. We work with specialist equine shippers and manage the entire process for you.
04What happens if there's a problem after the horse arrives?
We don't disappear after the sale. We stay in touch and are always available to advise on settling in, management, or training. Our reputation depends on happy horses and happy owners — that's why so many clients come back for a second or third horse.
05Do you handle the veterinary export requirements?
Yes — we coordinate all pre-export veterinary inspections, blood tests, health certificates, and USDA import documentation. Our shipping partners handle the quarantine process at both ends, so you don't have to navigate the paperwork yourself.
06Can I finance the purchase or pay in instalments?
We're happy to discuss flexible payment terms on a case-by-case basis. While we don't offer formal financing, we've accommodated phased payments for many US buyers. Just ask — we'll find something that works.
