British-Produced Showjumpers for Uruguay

Horses Smith produces elite showjumping sport horses in Kent, England. Uruguay is a small market with a serious horse culture, and its position between Buenos Aires and southern Brazil shapes how a purchase is best handled.

Small country, real horsemanship

Uruguay has more horses per head than almost anywhere and a riding culture that long predates the showjumping circuit. Buyers here read a horse properly. We publish full pedigrees, honest video and a price on every horse, and we are as clear about what we do not know as what we do.

Importing through MGAP

Import runs through MGAP, with an import permit, pre-export isolation and blood testing in the UK, an export health certificate, a flight into Montevideo and quarantine on arrival. Because the Uruguayan market is small, horses are sometimes routed through Buenos Aires or southern Brazil and moved on by road, which can be cheaper but adds a border and a layer of paperwork. Ask your agent to price both.

Or base the horse in Europe

For a competition horse, a European base in Belgium or the Netherlands avoids the import process entirely and keeps the horse in the classes it was produced for. For a horse coming home to a yard near Montevideo or Punta del Este, import is the right call.

Prices in GBP or EUR on application, not UYU. Horses measured in centimetres (hands in brackets). MGAP import costs and duty are additional.

Frequently asked questions

What does importing a horse to Uruguay involve?
An import permit through MGAP, pre-export isolation and blood testing in the UK, an export health certificate, a flight into Montevideo and quarantine on arrival. Allow two to three months.
Is it cheaper to route through Argentina or Brazil?
Sometimes, because there is more equine freight into Buenos Aires and São Paulo, but it adds a land border and more paperwork. Have your agent price a direct flight against the routed option before you decide.
Can I keep the horse in Europe?
Yes. For a horse bought to compete it is usually the better plan, avoiding duty and quarantine and keeping the horse in the European circuit.
How do I try the horse?
Video first, including the unflattering parts, then travel or send a rider or agent you trust. Pre-purchase examination by a vet you choose.
What do your horses cost?
Published prices across four open categories from Heritage to Elite, in GBP or EUR. MGAP and transport costs are additional.
