Portugal's showjumping community is growing steadily, with strong winter-sun competition and increasingly ambitious amateur and professional riders. A UK-produced jumper fits because it is brought on patiently, rideable and honest over a track. Buying from the UK gives Portuguese riders access to a far wider pool of well-produced sport horses with clear provenance.
Importing a sport horse to Portugal — the real logistics
Post-Brexit a UK horse enters Portugal as a third-country import, and we manage every step. We arrange the pre-export veterinary work and bloods, register the move on TRACES NT, obtain the export health certificate, and book an EU-approved transporter. Portugal is among the longer European routes, so horses generally travel by road through France and Spain, or by air for distant yards, with welfare rest built in.
How Horses Smith works
Portuguese clients usually start on video with honest commentary, full veterinary history and pedigree, and are welcome to ride and try in Kent. Independent pre-purchase vetting by your own veterinarian is encouraged. We then handle export documentation, customs and white-glove transport door to door, and remain on hand for aftercare.
