Chile buys well, and inspects properly
Chilean horse people have a reputation for doing the homework, and Chile's biosecurity regime is among the most rigorous in South America. Neither of those is a problem for us. Every horse here was bred or produced on one yard, with published pedigrees, honest video and a price on the site, so there is nothing that needs discovering at the vetting stage. We would rather you inspected hard and bought with confidence than bought quickly and found out later.
Importing through SAG
Import runs through SAG, the Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero, and Chile applies its controls strictly: import permit, pre-export isolation and blood testing in the UK, an export health certificate and quarantine on arrival, with horses generally flying into Santiago. Chile's geography works in its favour here, keeping a number of diseases out, which is exactly why the paperwork is demanding. Allow three months and use an agent who has done Chilean equine imports specifically, not general freight.
Or leave the horse in Europe
For a horse bought to compete rather than to come home, a European base in Belgium or the Netherlands avoids the import process entirely and keeps the horse in the classes it was produced for. Plenty of South American owners do exactly this. We will tell you which we think is right for the horse in front of you.
Prices in GBP or EUR on application, not CLP. Horses measured in centimetres (hands in brackets). SAG import costs and duty are additional.
