Buying a Showjumping Embryo in the UK: How It Actually Works
An embryo is the cheapest way to own a world-class damline and the most misunderstood purchase in the sport. What you are buying, what it costs, what can go wrong, and why breeders sell them at all.
What you are actually buying
An embryo purchase is exactly what it sounds like: you buy the unborn foal of a named mare and a named stallion, usually carried by a recipient mare, and it becomes yours at birth. Our embryos sit in the Heritage tier, from £4,000.
Why would anyone sell the start of a good horse? Because a breeding programme produces more embryos from a proven damline than any one yard can raise. Selling some funds the rest. The buyer gets something otherwise unbuyable: a foal from a damline whose finished horses sell for many multiples of the embryo price.
Why the damline is the whole argument
A stallion is available to everyone with a breeding fee. The damline is not. When we flush an embryo from a mare like the ones on our broodmare pages, the value is the bottom half of the pedigree: the half you cannot simply buy access to. Check any elite jumping pedigree and read the mare line back three generations. That is what an embryo purchase gives you a share of.
The honest risk list
We would rather you heard this from us than learned it later:
- The foal is not made yet. You are buying genetics and probability, not a guaranteed athlete. Nobody serious will promise you otherwise.
- Recipient mare and gestation risk. Pregnancies fail. Understand before you commit who carries that risk in the contract, and ask us exactly that question.
- Time. From embryo to ridden horse is four to five years. This is a purchase for people building something, not people shopping for this season.
What it costs, honestly
The embryo itself is the smallest number. Budget for the recipient mare arrangement, foaling, and then the ordinary costs of raising a young horse for several years. The reason it is still the best value in the sport: you reach a five-year-old of a quality that would cost several times your total outlay to buy ready-made, and you know its entire history because you owned it from before day one. That is how our whole programme works, compressed into one purchase.
